M3GAN 2 release date gets pushed back five months

M3GAN 2.0 will no longer be arriving in cinemas on January 17, 2025.

Fans of the AI horror M3GAN needn't worry though, as Universal Pictures is only pushing the sequel's release date back by five months – to Friday, May 16.

Filming is expected to begin soon, with director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper, plus cast members Violet McGraw (as Cady) and Allison Williams (Aunt Gemma) all returning for more evil doll mayhem.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the original movie, actress and executive producer Williams explained why it offered her a creatively refreshing opportunity.

"It was such a pleasure to be officially very involved in the movie from the beginning. I like to be that involved anyway, but this time, I had a credit that meant I was allowed to be – no-one could deny me drafts of the script. It was the best," she began.

"I absolutely loved it. I feel like it will be hard for me now to be in a movie where I'm not also producing because I just love all the details. I find it all fascinating and wonderful."

Williams, whose starred in Jordan Peele's iconic Get Out as well as hit series Girls, also weighed in on the layers to her robotics expert character Gemma.

"It's a really hard part to play, actually, because [Gemma] risks being the villain immediately. And yet, we are hoping that audiences [are] begging for her to do a better job. They can feel that she wants to do the right thing, but she just doesn't have the tools," she said.

"We know Cady's better off with her because she's a human being. But for a while, we are supposed to think that maybe M3GAN actually is a better idea – certainly a more fun one."

M3GAN 2.0 is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 16, 2025.
