MAC is releasing its first-ever gender-fluid makeup collection in collaboration with designer Harris Reed

MAC is launching its first-ever gender-fluid makeup collection in collaboration with designer Harris Reed.

Harris Reed, who identifies as gender-fluid, is based in London and has worked with Harry Styles and Solange Knowles.

The designer graduated from Central Saint Martins last summer, and is most famous for designing the smoking jacket and high-waisted pants Styles wore in his shoot for Vogue magazine last year.

The magazine called the designer the singer’s “secret fashion weapon”.

The new make-up line uses "elegantly fluid" colours, with influences including David Bowie and a young Mick Jagger.

“Harris has curated a range of products based on their updated vision of glamrock and dandyish dressing,” said Terry Barber, MAC director of makeup artistry, in a statement. “[The colours are] elegantly fluid, with influences ranging from Renaissance painting to the iconic imagery of David Bowie and a young Mick Jagger.”

Reed said that the product names used in the collection (like 'Not Sorry' and 'That Day Is Today') were devised to encourage people to be their authentic selves.

"Every single name in the collection is based on daily affirmations I tell myself," Reed told Allure. "Whether it's 'embrace your duality' or 'spark conversation,' I want men, women, non-binary people, and you to be able to pull it out and to put on the best version of themselves. They're putting on an affirmation; they're putting on something that it's really helping them enhance and showcase who they are."

All the products in the new line can be applied with your fingers, in an effort to make sure the collection is accessible.

Reed wanted to promote a playful approach with the collection. The lipsticks come in pans rather than tubes, meaning users can dab them elsewhere on their face, if they wish.

"Everything and anything goes," they said. "It's just like my approach to fashion. One thing isn't meant to be for a top. This fabric can be for boots, it can be for a hat. This eyeshadow is not for your eyes. This eyeshadow is for your collarbones; this eyeshadow is put up into your hairline and almost making a gold halo around your face."

The collection includes an eye shadow palette, a lip palette, a cream colour base and an eye kohl. It's due to be released 18 February and will be available from Selfridges, Brown Thomas and MAC. Prices range from £16 to £28.
