The Mad Max prequel is moving forward, but not with Charlize Theron.

The Oscar-winning actress was long presumed to be returning for the origin story of her character Furiosa, since she had previously said she was waiting for director George Miller to "show us the way".

During a recent profile in the New York Times, Miller explained that he has actually started auditions for a new actress to play the lead role in Mad Max: Furiosa.

"For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don't think we're nearly there yet," he admitted.

"Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there's still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video game designers, but there's still a pretty wide valley, I believe."

The filmmaker wrote an extensive backstory for Furiosa that will serve as a basis for the prequel, with Fury Road star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (aka The Splendid Angharad) among those to have read it.

"I got to read it when I was cast," she explained. "It's genius. I've always wondered if that movie's going to get made.”

Prior to Miller's comments this week, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron had finally acknowledged their well-publicised tension on the set of Fury Road.

"We were putting up walls to protect ourselves instead of saying to each other, 'This is scary for you, and it's scary for me, too. Let's be nice to each other'. In a weird way, we were functioning like our characters – everything was about survival," the Bombshell star admitted to the NYT.

Mad Max: Fury Road is available on Blu-ray, DVD and streaming.
