The parents of Madeleine McCann have reportedly been left “shocked and saddened” after a Facebook troll taunted them over their missing daughter.

The troll posted pictures of Kate and Gerry McCann, both 51, taken a restaurant in Scotland on Saturday, and wrote a message taunting them about Madeleine, the Sun reported.

The couple were pictured walking past a table at Beijing Banquet in Renfrew, near Glasgow, close to where Mr McCann has family.

The pair, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were carrying plates of buffet food back to their table in the pictures.

Alongside the images of the couple in the restaurant, the Facebook troll had reportedly posted the message: “Mum and dad are closer than I thought.”

A source from the family reportedly told the Sun: “Kate and Gerry are both shocked and saddened that someone could stoop this low.”

The McCanns’ family spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, declined to comment on the alleged trolling.

Madeleine went missing from the Praia da Luz holiday resort in Portugal in May 2007.

In June, a further £300,000 was approved by the Home Office for Scotland Yard to continue its investigation into her disappearance.

Metropolitan Police had asked for more funding to pursue “active lines of inquiries”.

The police investigation has so far cost £12 million.

On the 12th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance earlier this year, Kate and Gerry wrote on the official Find Madeleine website: “There is comfort and reassurance though in knowing that the investigation continues and many people around the world remain vigilant.

“Thank you to everyone who continues to support us and for your ongoing hope and belief.”
