As Harry Potter fans gear up for the third instalment of the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them franchise, they'll have a new Grindelwald to look forward to: actor Mads Mikkelsen has been named as Johnny Depp's replacement.

Earlier this month, Johnny Depp stepped down from his role in the spin-off, after losing a libel case against The Sun newspaper.

Warner Bros have since confirmed that the role will be taken on by Mads Mikkelsen, known for his roles in Casino Royale, The Hunt, Doctor Strange and Hannibal.

The third movie was delayed due to COVID-19 and the Depp court case, but is currently set for release in July 2022. Filming is now underway in the UK, with Eddie Redmayne reprising the role of Newt Scamander, Jude Law playing a young Albus Dumbledore and David Yates, who oversaw four Harry Potter movies and the first two Fantastic Beasts films, on to direct again.

So far, 55-year-old Mads hasn't spoken out about his new role. But the casting comes as Johnny Depp announced his resignation from the role with an extended statement.

He said:

"In light of recent events, I would like to make the following short statement. Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty. I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days.

Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.

Finally, I wish to say this. The surreal judgement of the court in the UK will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal. My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time. Thank you for reading."
