Whether Arnie is saying hasta la vista or not, there’s some ‘major’ news soon to be announced for the ‘Terminator’ franchise.

David Ellison, the boss of Skydance, which took over the production of the ‘Terminator’ movies with ‘Terminator Genisys’, has revealed that far from being sidelined following Genisys’s disappointing box office performance, the franchise is set to return.

“I will say we have resolved the future of the franchise and believe me its an incredibly bright future. I think where it’s going will be the continuation of what the fans really wanted since T2,” he told Collider.

“We have something this year that we will be announcing for the franchise. It’s something we’re incredibly excited about and we think is the direction it needs to head.”

Sources at Paramount told the New York Daily News this week that if the franchise moves forward, it could do so without an appearance from original Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger, though there’s been no confirmation of that from either Arnie or Skydance.

There were also reports in January that James Cameron, who regains the rights to the intellectual property in 2019, could be ‘godfathering’ a new Terminator project, though presumably his hands are pretty full with his ‘Avatar’ sequels.

When Skydance – which is also responsible for movies like ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, ‘World War Z’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’ – took over the franchise, it said there would be three movies on the way.

But production stalled after ‘Genisys’, directed by Alan Taylor, made a disappointing $440 million at the box office (for perspective, ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day made over $500 million, and that was in 1991).
