Manchester United have made a promise to Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat that they will try to buy him before the end of the transfer window, according to reports.
Erik ten Hag has come under criticism for his team selection in the Red Devils’ first two matches of the new Premier League season with his midfield coming under fire.
Mason Mount and Fernandes played in the same team as Casemiro with some critics suggesting Scott McTominay should’ve started to shore up their side.
And the Man Utd boss is hoping to bring in a new midfielder before the transfer window shuts with Amrabat and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch being particularly heavily linked.
There was one report which suggested Man Utd could ditch their attempts to sign a midfielder in favour of a move for a striker but that seems unlikely.
And now Italian website Quotidiano.net claim that Fiorentina are ‘confidently awaiting’ a bid from Man Utd after leaving Amrabat out of their squad for their 1-0 loss to Rapid Vienna on Thursday night.
Man Utd are only delaying making an official offer for the Morocco international as they hope to get the midfielder for a reduced price towards the end of the window after the Red Devils ‘promised’ to buy him this summer.
And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is expecting more than just a deal for Amrabat with Man Utd set to be “busy” in the final days of the transfer window as they look to move players in and out.
Romano wrote in his Caught Offside column: “Manchester United will be busy in the next days. Their intention is to approach Fiorentina and to discuss Sofyan Amrabat deal when everything will be clear for example on their midfield, including Scott McTominay’s future, so let’s see what happens.
“They’re still working on signing a backup goalkeeper and the only way for them to sign a new top centre-back is if they sell Harry Maguire but at the moment the only bid for Maguire was from less than £30 million pounds from West Ham and that deal collapsed so again, we have to wait and see.”
There are now rumours that Man Utd could look to bring in cover for Luke Shaw – who could be out for two months – with former Leicester City defender Ryan Bertrand linked.
When asked if he has the players at the club to cope without Shaw, Ten Hag told reporters on Friday: “Definitely, we have the solutions in our squad to cope with that. We thought before the season about this scenario, it could happen, you hope to avoid. But if it happens you have to be ready for it.
“That is the situation, it’s normal, top football, you got to the limits, injuries coming up, always disappointing but you have to deal with it and construct a squad. And deal with it.”
