Writer and producer Mara Brock Akil can now add actress to her resume. Known for creating such shows as Love Is, Being Mary Jane, The Game and Girlfriends, Brock Akil stars in a new action-adventure-style campaign video directed by Tyler, the Creator. It celebrates the latest collaboration between his sporty le Fleur clothing line and iconic label Lacoste.
The Lacoste x le Fleur capsule collection, available at lacoste.com and golflefleur.com, includes everything from a Varsity jacket and a knit cardigan to polo shirts, alpaca wool sweater vests, socks, T-shirts, pleated trousers and skirts, and even Swarovski pearl necklaces and bracelets, with prices ranging from $45 to $895 (for the Varsity jacket.) Logo details on the pieces include chainstitch embroidery with the word le Fleur as well as the Lacoste crocodile with Fleur printed on it.

In Tyler the Creator’s ad campaign video for the new collection, Brock Akil plays a mom who sets out on a treacherous adventure to reach her family after her flight is cancelled. Wearing a green cardigan and tan skirt from the new Lacoste x le Fleur collab, she takes a water-soaked ride in a boat piloted by a stranger (played by Tyler), faces down crocodiles on a beach and is rescued by a helicopter pilot who drops her from the sky, which finally reunites her with her loved ones.
What motivated Brock Akil to act for the first time and star in the video? “To flex a little, me and Tyler are aligned in that we have a body of work that moves culture,” Brock Akil tells THR. “It was a dream to be around someone as talented, driven and creative as Tyler. The story alone was wild and refreshing and a deeper metaphor for mothering and journeying through life. So it was an easy yes, especially when I blew the minds of my sons. What mother doesn’t want to impress their children, especially my sons, who are the coolest on the planet.”
Brock Akil’s son Nasir also stars in the video, which came about, she says, because “I asked.” “Once I heard the concept of me falling out of the sky just in time to take a family photo, I told his producer, Tara Razavi, that my youngest son is handsome, in town and would look great in Tyler’s collection. But they already had the family cast. In fact, Tyler had already shot the fashion images, but after my stellar first day of work, Tyler said he saw the pics of my son and would love to add him. In that moment, I stuck the landing on the Mom Olympics!”

Brock Akils adds that she “absolutely loved” shooting the video. “My mantra all day was to be of service to his story,” she says. “As a storyteller myself, it is the best gift you can give a creator. So, I just did what he asked with an attitude of gratitude and some personal style, and now the streets got me wanting to do more acting now! Seriously, Tyler made it safe to have that much fun and be free. His clear direction created an atmosphere that let us all open up and play with the most expressive parts of ourselves. I laughed all day and happily swung from a harness.”
