Margot Robbie has revealed she originally wanted Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot to star in the upcoming Barbie movie.

In an interview with British Vogue, the Babylon star admitted she envisioned Gadot as a Barbie in the Greta Gerwig-directed movie, though sadly Gadot wasn't available at the time.

Explaining why Gadot was a top casting choice for the film, Robbie said: "Gal Gadot is Barbie energy.

"Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork."

While Gerwig and Robbie were unsuccessful in securing Gadot for a role in the film, it was this "Barbie energy" that influenced the casting decisions for Barbie.

Robbie is one of a number of Barbies in the film, with popstar Dua Lipa, Sex Education's Emma Mackey and Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan all portraying different versions of the famous doll.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star Issa Rae will appear as President Barbie with Hari Nef playing Doctor Barbie. Meanwhile, Ghostbuster's Kate McKinnon was teased in the first-look trailer as Weird Barbie.

WWE star John Cena is one of the latest stars to be confirmed as part of the Barbie movie cast. During CinemaCon in April 2023, creatives behind the film shared an exclusive video of Cena appearing as long-haired Mermaid Ken.

Fans believe Cena will be the love interest to Dua Lipa's Mermaid Barbie – though there's been no official confirmation of this.

Lipa has also lent her vocals to the Barbie soundtrack with original song 'Dance the Night'. The track is available to stream or download from May 26.

Barbie is scheduled for cinemas on July 21.
