Mariah Carey: Ellen DeGeneres Show pregnancy interview was 'extremely uncomfortable'

Mariah Carey has admitted she felt “extremely uncomfortable” during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when she was pushed into revealing a pregnancy she later miscarried.

The singer appeared on the US talk show – which has just been axed in the wake of toxic workplace claims – in 2008 and was pressured to drink champagne to toast rumours she was expecting a child with then-husband Nick Cannon.

Carey recalled to Vulture of the interview: “I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath.

“I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.”

She went on to say there is, “an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do?”

During the encounter DeGeneres pressed Carey to confirm rumours she was pregnant. When the singer refused to give a direct answer the chat show host gave her a glass of champagne and pushed her to drink some to “toast to not being pregnant”.

When Carey faked sipping the drink, DeGeneres shouted: “You are pregnant!”

The singer – who became a mother to fraternal twins Moroccan and Monroe in April 2011 – revealed in 2010 that she was pregnant during that interview, but she later suffered a miscarriage.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has just been cancelled following allegations of bullying in the workplace.

WarnerMedia launched an internal investigation after a number of staff on the daytime talk show recently spoke out anonymously to BuzzFeed about their experiences of intimidation and racism.

No specific claims were made against DeGeneres, although some staff claimed they were told not to speak to the TV presenter if she was in the office.

The 62-year-old comedian has issued an apology to staff over video conference, saying: “I’m hearing that some people felt that I wasn’t kind or too short with them, or too impatient. I apologise to anybody if I’ve hurt your feelings in any way.”

Several celebrities have come out in support of the talk show host on social media, including Katy Perry, Kevin Hart, Alec Baldwin and Ashton Kutcher.
