Mark Protosevich To Write Flash Gordon Reboot For Matthew Vaughn

Is Mark Protosevich the screenwriter to save every one of us? 20th Century Fox would appear to think so, as they have reportedly hired him to script the long in-development reboot of ‘Flash Gordon.’

Hitfix report that Protosevich himself broke the news on his personal Facebook page - and what makes it all the more exciting is that the writer also appears to confirm that the film will indeed be directed by Matthew Vaughn.

The ‘Kick-Ass,’ ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘Kingsman: the Secret Service’ helmsman was reported to be in talks for ‘Flash Gordon’ late last year, but no official announcements had been made on the matter since.

It’s also worth noting that Vaughn and Protosevich have crossed paths before, as the writer penned an early draft of Marvel’s ‘Thor,’ which Vaughn was initially attached to direct before rewrites occurred, and Kenneth Branagh took over.

Still, though heavily rewritten by Marvel, Protosevich’s initial ‘Thor’ script - reportedly an entirely Asgard-based epic - garnered huge praise in some circles, as did his early draft of ‘John Carter of Mars’ (which was also significantly reworked into what wound up being ‘John Carter’).

Protosevich - whose other credits include ‘Poseidon,’ ‘I Am Legend’ and the ‘Oldboy’ remake - says “I can’t wait to get started and if you’re curious about the take? I’m not saying a word.

“All I’ll say is this - it will be nothing like any version of Flash Gordon you’ve seen.”

He will rewrite an earlier draft from screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Created by artist Alex Raymond in 1934, the intergalactic adventures of Flash Gordon have endured over the decades in comic strips, film serials, live action and animated TV shows, and most famously the ultra-high camp 1980 movie starring Sam J Jones in the title role, and boasting an unforgettable soundtrack by Queen.

Just when this new take on ‘Flash Gordon’ will get off the ground remains to be seen, however, as Vaughn is rumoured to be directing a sequel to ‘Kingsman’ this year, as well as another spy movie entitled ‘I Am Pilgrim.’
