Marvel Boss Discusses Captain America: Civil War's Big Surprise

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has shed some light on one of the ‘Captain America: Civil War’s biggest moments.

While promoting the new film Fiege spoke to io9 about the unforgettable scene, and was joined by writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who discussed the ‘Star Wars’ reference that caps it off.

The moment in question takes place half way through the fight between Team Cap and Team Iron Man at the German airport. In the hope of turning the tide of battle and buying time for Cap (Chris Evans), Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang reveals he has a trick up his sleeve.

Activating a new power, Ant-Man becomes Giant-Man, grabbing War Machine (Don Cheadle) out of the air before a battle begins between the pair, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Vision (Paul Bettany) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

Toward the end, Spidey hatches a plan that involves tying up Giant-Man’s legs like “in that really old movie, 'Empire Strikes Back” - as the teenage Peter Parker describes it, referencing the Battle of Hoth and its huge AT-AT walkers.

Spidey webs up the legs as War Machine and Iron Man deliver twin uppercuts to the jaw, knocking Scott Lang down for the count.

“It was just a great idea to turn the tide of the battle in a huge, shocking, unexpected way,” said Feige. “We have a lot of ideas for ['Ant-Man And The Wasp’], none of which are contingent upon revealing Giant-Man, so we thought this would be the fun, unbelievable unexpected way to do that.”

McFeely and Markus revealed there was some pushback from the studio. "The brothers [directors Joe and Anthony Russo] had to fight for it,” said the former. “They had to go to the studio and say, ‘No it’s not silly, it’s cool.’”

As for the 'Star Wars’ reference, the writers weren’t so sure. “The brothers really wanted to put it in there,” said McFeely. “We get a little queasy about referencing other movies. They don’t, and they were right.”
