Marvel’s Kevin Feige Gets Candid About ‘Endgame’, ‘Guardians 3’, ‘Silver Surfer’ & James Gunn

It was the first time at the Golden Globes for Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige on Sunday night thanks to the Black Panther. Although it was a night to celebrate the Ryan Coogler-directed cultural phenomenon, we can’t help but think about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the end of Avengers: Infinity War and the pending Fox-Disney merger.

During an interview with MTV on the Golden Globes red carpet, Feige addressed the many projects that are hanging in the balance at the MCU. First thing’s first: Avengers: Endgame. With the recent trailer, fanboys and fangirls were teased with the fate of our favorite heroes — but Feige assures that the marketing material will not show anything beyond the first 15 to 20 minutes of the movie. “Being able to generate excitement without giving away any of the many, many, many secrets will be ideal,” Feige said.

As for the title of the closing chapter of this MCU phase, he reveals that it was in place before they even developed the movie. He adds: “Doctor Strange says that line [in Infinity War] because we knew it was the title.”

With the Disney-Fox merger on the horizon, it opens the MCU to a brand new roster of characters from the X-universe. Feige said that he is excited for the hundreds of names that will be available for him to play with heroes and villains from the Fantastic Four unvierse — including Silver Surfer, who Vice director Adam McKay has shown interest in.

“He is not only an incredibly smart guy, he’s an honest to goodness fan,” said Feige of McKay possibly making a Silver Surfer film. He said he hasn’t gotten a call from McKay yet, but if any director should direct a Silver Surfer movie, it should be McKay. He helped with the first Ant-Man film and if you have watched Vice, there is a reference to Galactus, who is very much part of Silver Surfer lore.

Another movie hanging in the balance is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With James Gunn out and no director, production has paused, but Feige guarantees that there will be a third installment of our favorite space opera misfits.

“Guardians will happen,” he said. “When, where, how — that’s for a later time.”

He somewhat addressed Gunn’s departure and the non-existent rivalry between DC and Marvel. Feige loved Aquaman and said that he doesn’t have hard feelings over Gunn going to DC to direct the Suicide Squad sequel.

“One thing you know about James Gunn is that he makes good films,” he admits.
