Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’: Netflix Drops Season 2 Trailer And Release Date

The Netflix series The Punisher, the high-caliber vigilante saga based on the popular Marvel Comics crime-fighting commando, will return with the Jan. 18 release of Season 2, according to the just-released teaser trailer.

The new season finds the Punisher, a.k.a. Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), as a nomad living on borrowed time — a plot description that also works as a summary of the show’s fading future as a Netflix resident franchise. More on that situation below, but first, a look at Season 2…

The official Netflix set-up synopsis for the new season of The Punisher: “Former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham). As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace a life as the Punisher.”

Destiny is not on the side of The Punisher series itself these days, at least not as far as its Netflix future. The streaming service has pulled the plug on three of its Marvel shows (Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) and by all signs The Punisher (and fellow Marvel survivor Jessica Jones) will be giving up the ghost in fairly short order as well.

The slate of Marvel adaptations were a splashy, attention-grabbing get for Netflix when they were announced in 2013 but to secure it they agreed to pay production costs without any ownership stake. That limited upside was acceptable until Marvel’s parent, Disney, announced the 2019 launch of Disney+, a direct rival to Netflix that will have Marvel Studios content as a flagship in its subscription armada.

Factor in Disney’s plan to also withdraw its past and present content from Netflix in the months ahead and it’s no surprise that the Netflix view of its Marvel shows went from “tolerably expensive” to “urgently expendable.”

The Punisher is based on the Marvel Comics character introduced in a 1974 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man and created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. For the Netflix series, Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. The cast also features Ben Barnes (Billy Russo), Amber Rose Revah (Dinah Madani), Jason R. Moore (Curtis), Josh Stewart (John Pilgrim), and Floriana Lima (Dr. Krista Dumont).
