Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield was the architect of his own viral Oscars moment last weekend.

According to three-time ceremony host Jimmy Kimmel's wife Molly McNearney, her husband's jokey list of celebrity security guards was pre-planned.

Kimmel referenced Creed III's Michael B Jordan, Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh, The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal and The Fabelmans director Steven Spielberg, yet Garfield had a twist up his sleeve for the cameras.

"You're gonna have to do battle with Michelle Yeoh before you get to me; you're gonna have to beat the Mandalorian before you get me; you are gonna have to tangle with Spider-Man..." said Kimmel from the stage, with the latter seen apologetically grinning.

"I went up to Michelle, Michael [B Jordan], Pedro, Andrew, Steven, and we told them minutes before the show started, 'you're going to be on camera, Jimmy's going to refer to you as part of his security team. If you could just show some kind of physical support or give him a fist bump...'" McNearney told Variety.

"They were all game and they were very supportive."

Apparently, Garfield was asked to perform a Spidey web-sling, but he ended up making "his own choice, which I think even better", she admitted.

This was all, of course, a tongue-in-cheek allusion to Will Smith and Chris Rock's slapping scandal from last year's Oscars, where the eventual Best Actor prize recipient strolled up to the host on stage and whacked him across the cheek.

"Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me!" Rock told a stunned A-list crowd before carrying on with the show.
