Marvel's Benedict Wong cast in thriller remake

Marvel's Benedict Wong has signed on to appear in the English-language remake of Thai phenomenon Bad Genius.

From writer-director JC Lee (The Morning Show), Variety confirmed that the thriller will shoot this May, with Jabari Banks (Bel-Air) and Callina Liang (Tell Me Everything) also on the cast list.

Released in 2017, Bad Genius (or Chalard Games Goeng) debuted at No. 1 at its native country's box office, ultimately becoming one of the most internationally successful Thai movies made.

Lee is teaming up with Julius Onah (director of Captain America: New World Order) to write the script, which is described as a "high-stakes, high-octane thriller" concerned with a "diverse group of young people fighting the system of injustice and inequity" with the goal of taking down rigged academic institutions.

The debutant filmmaker shared in a statement: "I am so excited to share a new take on what was already a wildly successful and remarkable film. I can't wait to work with this fantastic, innovative group of artists, drawing on our diverse array of real-world experiences to make a film as thrilling and fun as the original."

Before that, though, Wong fans will witness the actor breathe life into the character Shi Qiang in Netflix's episodic adaptation of Liu Cixin's sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem. Co-starring are Game of Thrones trio Liam Cunningham, John Bradley and Jonathan Pryce.

Addressing the project when it was first announced, the streamer's vice president of original series drama Peter Friedlander praised the "singular, special and eminently relatable" story.

"Every person involved not only shares a passion and high esteem for the books, but also the creative vision and ambition to help bring this remarkable story to life for audiences around the world. We all share the same goal: to pay homage to this incredible story and take members on the adventure of a lifetime," he added.
