Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War Passes $1 Billion At Box Office

It’s no surprise to learn that one of Marvel’s most successful movies ever, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, has now made more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The thirteenth film from Disney and Marvel has only been out in the US for 17 days, but it’s been a huge hit domestically, having scooped an epic $323 million, with that number set to rise over the coming weeks.

The UK, however, saw the movie land a week earlier (29 April), and has received positive review both here and across the Atlantic. Recently, it’s been battling to overtake Disney’s other big-hitter of the year, ‘Zootropolis’, as the biggest film of 2016 and has now done so.

In total, it’s taken the Chris Evans-fronted solo outing just 24 days to reach the milestone, joining three of their other superhero films in the exclusive $1 billion+ club - Joss Whedon’s ‘Avengers Assemble’ in 2012 was the first with $1.5 billion; Shane Black’s ‘Iron Man’ followed a year later with $1.2 billion; and Whedon’s second outing with ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in 2014 made $1.4 billion.

Marvel didn’t have much trouble surpassing DC’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, which disappointingly failed to pass a billion, now sitting at $870 million with a mountain of middling to scsthing reviews for the Zack Snyder film.

But to most people’s amazement, Fox’s ‘Deadpool’ has offered the strongest superhero competition for Marvel in 2016, with an excellent $763 million from a budget of just $58 million (compared to ‘Civil War’ and ‘BvS’s’ $250 million).

‘Captain America: Civil War’ is in UK cinemas now.
