The Marvels debuts top of box office despite setting unwanted MCU record
The Marvels has debuted top of the US box office, but it has set a new unwanted MCU record in the process.
Originally tracking for a potential debut of $75 million to $80 million, The Marvels ended up grossing only an estimated $47 million on its opening weekend. That marks the lowest-ever debut for an MCU movie, behind The Incredible Hulk's $55.4 million back in 2008.
Final opening weekend figures will be confirmed tomorrow (November 13), but it won't be able to make up that gap to The Incredible Hulk.
It's not the lowest debut for a comic book movie this year though as both Shazam! Fury of the Gods ($30.1 million) and Blue Beetle ($25 million).
The picture isn't much brighter worldwide though as with $110.3 million, including its US debut, The Marvels also delivered the lowest-ever global debut for an MCU movie. But there is potential reason for hope in the coming weeks.
With the actors' strike over, the stars have begun to promote The Marvels with Brie Larson appearing on The Tonight Show and Iman Vellani surprising fans at the El Capitan Theatre on opening night (November 10).
There will likely be more promotion over the next week or so, including possibly from the surprise cameo stars of the movie which might persuade a wider Marvel fanbase to see the new movie.
The final trailer's sharp swerve to tease the X-Men cameo might have come too late to save the opening weekend, but it could also be used to promote a longer run for The Marvels.
It's all speculative for now as, with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes out next Friday (November 17), there will be serious blockbuster competition for The Marvels to contend with.
Despite a strong 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Marvels also has to contend with a B CinemaScore which doesn't suggest overwhelming fan support for the movie. It's the same rating as Eternals and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania received.
For now, Disney will be hoping The Marvels can at least sustain or post a minimal drop in its second weekend, otherwise the picture might be looking even bleaker.
