Guardians of the Galaxy actress Karen Gillan looks dangerous in the first shot from assassin flick Gunpowder Milkshake.

Scheduled to come out next year in the US, the movie centres on Gillan's character Sam, who was just a youngster when her hitwoman mother Scarlet (played by Game of Thrones' Lena Headey) abandoned her.

Raised by a crime syndicate known as The Firm, Sam follows in Scarlet's footsteps and becomes a gun-for-hire herself, mopping up mess around town. But when a job goes awry, she must choose between The Firm and protecting an innocent 8-year-old girl named Emily (Chloe Coleman).

Elsewhere, it was previously revealed that Gillan auditioned for a completely different MCU character before landing the part of Nebula.

"She came and she had auditioned for Agent 13 in Captain America," shared casting director Sarah Finn.

"Karen was someone who was an incredibly grounded and solid actor but who was also cooky and charming in the most wonderful way."

Gunpowder Milkshake will hit cinemas next year.
