The Master reigns with LA critics

14 January 2013

Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master has taken Los Angeles film critics under its spell, as it scooped four gongs at the LA Film Critics Awards.

Joaquin Phoenix was honoured with the best actor prize and Amy Adams received the best supporting actress award, while the filmmaker was named best director, beating Kathryn Bigelow. The movie also won best production design.

Jennifer Lawrence, who is Oscar-nominated for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, and Amour star Emmanuelle Riva tied for best actress, with Amour winning best picture ahead of The Master.

"It still hasn't sunk in yet," said Jennifer.

She revealed that the role has changed her: "I've definitely grown up more. David O'Russell and Debra Granik (Winter's Bone) are so different directors. They are both incredible but so different."

Beasts Of The Southern Wild, starring Oscar-nominated starlet Quvenzhane Wallis, took home three gongs including a best supporting actor honour for first-time actor Dwight Henry, best music score and the New Generation award.

Dwight, a baker from New Orleans, admitted that he has no plans to up sticks and pursue a career in Tinseltown following his win.

"My heart is in the bakery. I've been baking and I work so hard to build my bakery to pass on to my five children. I still can't sacrifice my bakery and my heart. Hollywood will have to come to me...," he said.

He added his life has changed since starring in the drama: "Everywhere I go in New Orleans, somebody recognises me. I can't even go to the grocery store without somebody saying, 'That's him from that film'."

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie won best animation, Leos Carax's Holy Motors was named best foreign language film and Skyfall stole best cinematography.
