Masters Of The Universe Movie Still In The Works

In case you’d forgotten – ‘Masters of the Universe’ is still happening.

During an interview with IGN, director Joseph ‘McG’ McGinty gave an update on how ‘Masters of the Universe’ is coming along… and it sounds as though they’re close to getting this off the ground.

“It’s a very exciting moment for Masters of the Universe,” he said. “We have a big meeting with Sony regarding prep of the movie on Wednesday. And we’re in the middle of a bit of a script polish, and it’s my absolute passion. I’m laser-focused on that being my next film.”

“But I mean, you know how it works in contemporary filmmaking. You really, really have to earn the good will of the parent studio, and Tom Rothman runs a tight ship at Sony, and we’re going to get there. I’m so happy to report that to the fans.”

Not that there’s an awful lot to report.

At the moment, the ‘Masters of the Universe’ reboot is still in early production… and McG admits that while there’s some truth to those casting rumours, the role of He-Man hasn’t been cast just yet.

And Kellan Lutz could be in with a shot.

“We haven’t cast the role yet, but I like Kellan very much,” he said. “Obviously, we need a talented entertainer, but we also need a certain physicality, which he embodies.”

Of course, Kellan was first mentioned in connection to the role after he took to social media and strongly hinted that he was in the running…

But it sounds as though the director is rather keen on him.

“He’ll be considered very, very closely,” he added. “We haven’t gotten to the casting process yet. Kellan’s a good guy, and we had a great meeting, and he’s passionate about He-Man, he’s passionate about the Adam story. He really knows a lot about it. I was charmed by his focus and intensity. He’ll be considered very, very carefully. We’re just not there yet. We’ve got to get the movie on its feet, then we’ll cast the movie.”

So what will ‘Masters of the Universe’ be about?

Well, unlike previous films, the new ‘Masters of the Universe’ will be an origin story.

“It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man,” he explained. “We’re not going to stop until we get it right.”

He also confirmed that while the film won’t be entirely set on Eternia, we shouldn’t get our hopes up about seeing Earth, either. “Earth is mentioned, as Earth is a part of the lore. But it’s largely an Eternia story.”

Could this be a reference to the original ‘Masters of the Universe’?

Well, there was a deleted scene which confirmed that Eternia had been colonised by Astronauts from Earth… and this would certainly tie into the lore McG mentioned.

But we’ll have to wait and see.

Thankfully, it looks as though Battle Cat will be appearing… and after the awesome concept art revealed by Devon Franklin, we can’t wait to see what they come up with.

“I think it’s important to go, as we discover Adam and He-Man, we discover Cringer and Battle Cat,” he said… and he also confirmed how important Skeletor is to the movie. “By the way, to me: Vader, Gruber, Skeletor. That’s how powerful the antagonist is to me. Maybe I’m just a weirdo. No, but, for real. I think that’s how important Skeletor is to the world.”

Who will play the big, bad Skeletor?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see…
