Masters Of Sex the movie?

Author originally wanted book made into film

Masters Of Sex the movie?

COMMENT| 'Masters Of Sex' was widely regarded as the best new drama of 2013. Its luscious period setting, compelling performances and the quirky romance between its two leads left fans eagerly awaiting its return later this year.

However, Thomas Maier, the author behind sex researchers Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson's biography has now revealed that he originally believed his work should have been made into a movie rather than a television drama.

The Wall Street Journal reported last that month that Maier had to be convinced to accept Showtime's deal to produce his book, and that he'd had two or three offers to turn "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How to Love," into a big screen adventure.

Maier has now confirmed that he was finally persuaded to accept the small screen offer after he was informed that it would be akin to AMC's 'Mad Men.'

He has now admitted that he doesn't regret his decision in the slightest, especially with the news that 'Masters Of Sex' has now been renewed for a second season.

Time will ultimately tell if Maier was right to think that 'Masters Of Sex' would have made a better movie than TV show. But, some of its first season's episodes lacked compelling stories, and at times it felt as if they were stretching its flimsy plot to its limit. Hopefully they have learnt from these mistakes, and righted this wrong before its impending return.

Maier even discussed how he has become an integral member of the creative team behind the drama, even though he expected to be ignored immediately after he sold the credits. Not only does he have a producer's credit, but he has also provided story ideas and notes on the series' tone to showrunner Michelle Ashford, and he's described the entire process as a "terrific experience."

According to Maier, Ashford has "bent over backwards to be true to the book," and he continues to think about fictional story lines that the show could use in its second season that he has passed onto the show's writers.

Meanwhile, Allison Janney has admitted she will return as Margaret Scully for 'Masters Of Sex's' second season. 'The West Wing' actress told Digital Spy, "I don't know how many episodes, 'cos I don't know what can happen with Margaret Scully at this point. But I know it was a great storyline to get to play and I'm sure that they're going to want to tie that off somehow."

'Masters Of Sex' is expected to return to US screens next autumn, and it will hopefully be shown in the UK shortly after.

Do you think 'Masters Of Sex' would have been better as a movie?
