Matilda is getting another screen adaptation – this time as a film version of the hit musical.

Matilda the Musical, which has songs written by Tim Minchin, has run in London's West End since 2011 and has also played on Broadway.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a movie adaptation of the stage play will arrive in cinemas in the UK only and get a home release, before streaming on Netflix around the world.

The release details are still being worked out between production company Sony and Netflix, reportedly over what point in the UK cinema release it will go on Netflix globally.

The movie is set to be directed by Matthew Warchus (Pride), and a recent casting call for children aged 9 to 11 confirmed a movie was in the works.

Matilda was famously adapted into a 1996 movie starring Mara Wilson as the titular heroine, as well as Danny DeVito, Pam Ferris and Embeth Davidtz.

The original Roald Dahl story follows the story of a young child prodigy with magic powers who is mistreated by her parents and cruel headmistress, but forms a strong bond with teacher Miss Honey.

Meanwhile, it was revealed back in 2018 that Netflix would be adapting Dahl's works for a new series of animated shows.
