The Matrix 4 has given the red pill to one fan-favourite cast member from How I Met Your Mother – and another major star could be returning to the series.

Firstly, Jada Pinkett Smith – who played the role of Niobe in parts 2 and 3, The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions – is in talks to make her comeback in the new film, Deadline reports, although nothing has been confirmed just yet.

The sequel is gearing up for production as original co-creator Lana Wachowski assembles a pretty impressive cast, with Variety reporting on the latest addition.

HIMYM star Neil Patrick Harris has also signed up for a significant role in The Matrix 4, although Wachowski is keeping NPH's part secret for now.

While Harris is best known for his light-hearted comedy roles in How I Met Your Mother and A Series of Unfortunate Events, he has shown tremendous range in the past too.

Remember how creepy he was as the obsessive ex-boyfriend in Gone Girl? NPH has also gone gory in the past during his appearances in American Horror Story.

Much like with NPH, The Matrix 4 also recently cast Aquaman and The Greatest Showman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in a top-secret role.

There has been speculation that the movie will feature a young Neo, but what we do know is that original cast members Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are definitely returning.

Lana Wachowski has announced: "Many of the ideas [sister] Lilly [Wachowski] and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

"I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Production on The Matrix 4 is set to begin early next year in Chicago, but there is no release date yet.
