It’s official – ‘The Great Wall’ is a huge flop.

We’ve all said it – What on Earth is Matt Damon doing in ‘The Great Wall’?

Melding Eastern and Western culture, the recent action flick stars Matt Damon as a European mercenary in China during the Song dynasty. But don’t for one minute think that it’s a period drama. It’s not that at all. Heading to the Great Wall of China, he meets a group of Chinese soldiers who defend the wall against monster.

That’s right – monsters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the weird fantasy/historical mashup hasn’t gone down too well… and it’s likely to make a loss of up to $75 million.

“The collapse of The Great Wall at the domestic box office (it has made $34.8 million in North America) has iced any notion of a significant future for U.S.-China co-productions,” they explain. “The movie likely will end up with losses of more than $75 million, sources say, and Universal Pictures will be on the hook for at least $10 million.”

Considering the film’s $150 million budget, ‘The Great Wall’ is a huge washout.

So what went wrong?

Well, it’s not particularly good, for a start.

“Among the lessons insiders have learned are the difficulties of finding stories that meld Eastern and Western characters and the challenges of blending crews, which in Wall’s case meant hiring 100 interpreters and solving conflicts that allegedly took place among some below-the-line workers.”

“This was the first movie of its type,” said one executive connected to the project. “You’re trying to appeal to everyone, and you’re not compelling enough to appeal to anyone. It feels like Esperanto.”

‘The Great Wall’ stars Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, Tian Jing, Andy Lau and Hanyu Zhang.

Yimou Zhang directed based on script by Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, and Tony Gilroy.

‘The Great Wall’ is in cinemas now.
