Matthew McConaughey Turned Down Villainous Role In Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

It looks as though Matthew McConaughey won’t be taking a comic book movie role just yet… as it’s revealed that he turned down the main villain in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’.

According to Variety, the 45-year-old actor passed up the opportunity to play a Marvel villain… with casting continuing for the role.

“Marvel and Gunn wanted Matthew McConaughey to play the villain in the superhero sequel, but the actor recently passed, leaving the search for that part still in progress,” they revealed. “Sources say that decision should be made in the coming weeks, as production is expected to begin in early 2016.”

Of course, McConaughey revealed back in May that he’s been in talks for both Marvel and DC roles… even going so far as to read scripts for various parts.

“I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with you what they are — or were,” he told Variety. “Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it.”

Obviously, it looks as though the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sequel is one of the parts he’s been circling… but it remains unclear as to why the ‘Interstellar’ star passed on the role.

Although, that earlier interview may shed some light…

“It’s very simple for me,” he said. “I look at the script. Is the opportunity exciting? […] Contractually, you’re going to return to the character over and over. It’s something I asked myself is it something I’d want to return to. Would I be excited to go back and put the shoes on the character again? Going and doing the press tour with that group of people again? I always ask myself those questions again. It starts with the story and character.”

Either way, it looks as though we won’t get to see Matthew McConaughey in the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sequel.

But will he ever be convinced to join a comic book movie? For now, we have to wait and see.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ heads to cinemas on 5 May 2017.
