You're going to want to watch the May December trailer on repeat. It's only a teaser but we’re already obsessed with the, well, obsessive vibe.
The film stars Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Riverdale hottie Charles Melton and is the latest from queer auteur Todd Haynes (Carol, Far From Heaven, Mildred Pierce). Moore plays former teacher Gracie Atherton-Yu, who was forced into the public eye when she wed her young husband Joe Yu ( Melton), a tabloid-gripping (ripped from the headlines) romance that began when he was just 13. The film picks up 20 years after the incident when Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) arrives to shadow Gracie and research her for an upcoming role.
Soon, under her watchful eye, the family dynamics begin to fray and unravel as Joe, so young when the romance began, has never been able to fully come to grips with and process everything that happened in his life — and is now an empty nester at the ripe old age of 36.
The film reunites Moore with Haynes who previously worked together on “Safe,” “Wonderstruck,” and “Far from Heaven.” May December is based on a Black List script by Samy Burch with a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik.
May December premieres in select theaters on Friday, November 17, and heads to Netflix on Friday, December 1. Watch the trailer below.
