McConaughWHO? Oscar-Winner Is Unrecognisably Fat and Bald In First Gold Trailer

Matthew McConaughey has ditched his matinee idol looks for his new movie ‘Gold’.

The McConnaissance has finally unshackled the star from the demands of Hollywood; his Oscar-winning comeback means he no longer has to conform to the standards expected of most leading men.

So, here we see him like we’ve never seen him before - fat, balding, and ugly - just like the rest of us.

The Texan-born star shaved his head, piled on the pounds, and wore false teeth to play Kenny Mills, a down on his luck chancer who literally strikes gold in the jungles of Indonesia, for the film that hits cinemas this Christmas.

He can also be seen parading around in an awful pair of dirty Y-fronts, something that the buff ‘Fool’s Gold’-era McConaughey wouldn’t have been seen dead wearing.

The first trailer for the film from Stephen Gaghan, the writer-director of ‘Syriana’, suggests a retro-styled cautionary tale of greed and corruption in the vein of ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ and it’s exactly the sort of role McConaughey wanted to play after years of being stuck in rom-com purgatory.

His character seems to have taken style tips from Christian Bale’s character in ‘American Hustle’, who also went fat and bald for his Oscar-nominated turn as con-man Irving Rosenfeld.

Coincidentally, Bale was once linked to the Kenny Mills role when Michael Mann was on board to direct, and it was McConaughey who beat Bale to the Oscar the year he was nominated for ‘American Hustle’. Time is a flat circle and all that.
