(AP)Meghan Markle said she relates to the iconic Disney filmThe Little Mermaid, as she finds a version of her royal life story in it.
During the much-talked-about Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special, the Duchess of Sussex, 39, talked to Oprah Winfrey in detail about her experience as a royal and what led her to leave, in which she said her story is like Princess Ariel of The Little Mermaid.
"I was sitting in Nottingham cottage and Little Mermaid came on," Meghan said. "And who, as an adult, really watches The Little Mermaid but it came on and I was like, “Well I’m here all the time I might as well watch this,” and I went, “Oh my God she falls in love with the prince and because of that she loses her voice.” “
“But in the end, she gets her voice back,” she said.
The famous Disney fairy tale is based upon a mermaid, Ariel, who falls in love with a prince and trades her voice in order to become human for three days. The Duchess of Sussex said she felt like she lost her voice and could not speak about what she was going through.
Meghan, who has been vocal about several social issues in the past, was also asked by Oprah if she was “silent or silenced” in the early period of her royal life with Harry, to which the Duchess of Sussex replied: "The latter."
"I’ve always valued independence. I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights, and that’s the sad irony of the last four years, I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice. And then I was silent," Meghan said, as she answered Oprah’s question that she was "silenced."
In the interview, Meghan also spoke about the sacrifices she made to be with Harry and his family and denied allegations that she orchestrated the royal exit, which was dubbed "Megxit" by the media.
"Can you imagine how little sense that makes? I left my career, my life, I left everything because I love him," Meghan told Oprah.
In the end, Oprah asked Meghan, "So your story with the prince does have a happy ending?," to which Meghan said, "It does. Greater than any fairytale you’ve ever read."
