A whole lot of revelations were aired in Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey, which was broadcast in America last night and will come to TV screens in the UK this evening on ITV. And one of them addresses what has really gone on between Meghan and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, after years of speculation about the dynamic between the two royal women.

Setting the record straight, Meghan described Kate as "a good person" in the interview, which means there's categorically no need for any further talk of a 'feud' between the pair. What the Duchess of Sussex did go on to share, however, was that it hasn't always been totally plain sailing between she and Kate, especially in times of stress - but that news reports had totally muddled up what actually happened.

"They really seem to want a narrative of a hero and a villain," Meghan Markle said of the media. "She's a good person," she added. "So much of what I have seen play out is this idea of polarity, where if you love me, you don't have to hate her. And if you love her, you don't need to hate me."

In 2018, several months after Meghan and Harry got married (though, on that, it turns out they were already secretly married at the royal wedding 🤯) a news story broke that Kate Middleton was "left in tears" after Princess Charlotte's dress fitting for Meghan's wedding. But according to Meghan's version of events, it was actually the other way round, and she feels this is a prime example of how she has been needlessly villainised by UK press.

"The reverse happened," Meghan told Oprah. "A few days before the wedding, [Kate] was upset about something - yes, the issue was correct, about the flower girl dresses - and it made me cry and it really hurt my feelings and I thought in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding that it didn’t make sense to not be just doing what everyone else was doing, which was try to be supportive, knowing what was going on with my dad."

Meghan clarified that "there wasn’t a confrontation," but as there had clearly been some upset, it was an issue to be smoothed over between the two of them. And, just as civilised humans would, Meghan and Kate went on to work it out between themselves. "[Kate] apologised, and she brought me flowers and a note apologising, which is what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone... to just take accountability for it," explained the Duchess of Sussex.

Since then, Meghan says, the incident has been forgiven and forgotten, so she was distressed to see it dredged up in newspaper reports with all the facts muddled.

Meghan added that she wasn't sharing this information "to be in any way disparaging about [Kate]," but added: "I would hope that she would want that to be corrected."
