Mel Gibson has an HOUR of unseen Braveheart scenes

‘Braveheart’ Director’s Cut, anyone?

During an interview with Collider, Mel Gibson revealed that he has a whole hour of deleted ‘Braveheart’ scenes… and he may be tempted to do something with it.

Asked about Braveheart’s final cut, Gibson revealed that the movie “lost almost an hour” by the time the final version was completed. “There’s almost an hour lying around someplace.”

Obviously, he also confirmed that this includes lots of scenes which fans have never seen before. Not surprising, when you consider the sheer amount of footage which ended up on the cutting room floor.

But could the original 3 hour 45 minute ‘Braveheart’ cut see the light of day?

The 60-year-old actor and filmmaker confirmed that he would be interested in releasing an ‘ultimate’ cut of the movie, if the fans were interested.

“People have mentioned it,” he said. “It’s a big deal. If somebody at Fox or Paramount want to finance that then yeah. If they want to dig up the footage, then I’ll slap it back together.”

“I have it on tape somewhere, the whole three hour and forty-five minute thing,” he added. “It’s like, ‘Wow, there’s a lot of things in there.’ We did excise the right stuff.”

Even after the rather hefty edit, the theatrical cut of ‘Braveheart’ clocked in at 178 minutes - that’s almost three hours long… and Gibson confirmed that his team really struggled to get it down that much.

Thankfully, he managed it, and ‘Braveheart’ went on to earn 10 Academy Award nominations - winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, and Best Sound Editing.

Would the extended cut have been met with such critical acclaim?

Perhaps one day we’ll get to find out.
