Michael Jackson’s Chimp Bubbles Gets Animated Biopic

At last, we’re getting a big screen take on the life of one of the most famous pop stars of all time… from the point of view of his pet chimpanzee.

Deadline report that ‘Bubbles,’ an unofficial semi-biopic of the late Michael Jackson told from the perspective of the eponymous ape, is to be produced as a stop-motion animated feature from the makers of the Oscar-nominated ‘Anomalisa.’

The script from writer Isaac Adamson recently took the number 1 slot on the Black List, a list of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood.

Bubbles was adopted by Jackson when the King of Pop was at the height of his fame in 1983. Jackson’s close relationship with the chimp, who would often accompany him to events around the world, facilitated the singer-songwriter’s eccentric image in the media.

Bubbles lived with Jackson along with a menagerie of other animals at Neverland Ranch, until being moved to an ape sanctuary in 2005.

Deadline remark that Adamson’s script has been widely regarded as “a very inventive way to tell an unauthorized story of Jackson without needing permission.”

Given the period of Jackson’s life it will cover, and the fact that ‘Anomalisa’ is an adult-oriented animation, it seems reasonable to expect that ‘Bubbles’ will not wind up being an animated movie you can take the kids to.

Dan Harmon will produce the film via his company Starburns Industries.
