Michelle Keegan on Why She Quit 2-Hour Gym Workouts (& What She Does Instead)

From Women's Health

  • WH cover star Michelle Keegan has revealed she used to 'guilt' herself into doing two-hour gym workouts

  • However, the 33-year-old actress has revealed on our Going For Goal podcast that she's cultivated a more balanced approach to exercise over the last few years

  • She chats to us about staying in shape at home with husband Mark Wright during lockdown

If you're one of Michelle Keegan's 4.8m Instagram followers, you'd be forgiven for thinking the TV star has got it all sussed - gorgeous home, great career and some of the glossiest hair to ever grace the cover of WH (and that's saying a lot). But, in the latest episode of our Going For Goal podcast, she opens up to us about how feeling ok in her own skin has been a work in progress. And not least when it comes to her healthy lifestyle.

'I haven’t worked out for two weeks, but I’m not punishing myself over that,' the actress told our editor-in-chief Claire Sanderson during their chat - recorded just before Christmas - of how she has developed a more balanced attitude since she last appeared on the front of the magazine three years ago. 'If I want a cheeseboard one night, I’ll have it, without feeling guilty.

'[Previously] it was always the guilt for me a lot of the time, and why I would be in the gym for two hours because I was like ‘oh I’ve really been bad this week, so I need to go in the gym, I need to work it off’. I was in the gym for two hours.'

Just like the rest of us, the Our Girl lead has been embracing home workouts since the start of the pandemic. Including joining in with husband Mark's live virtual sweat sessions.

'The fact that he [Mark] would roll out of bed, go into the garden, and I could hear him setting up live outside and I thought "I’ve literally got no excuse, I’m in the bedroom",' Michelle admitted. 'I literally did it there and then – got my gym mat on the floor and I did half an hour HIIT in the bedroom, and it just set me up for the day and made me feel a lot more positive with what was going on at that time.'

But the former Corrie favourite also revealed that she has discovered new - and rather unlikely - ways to stay fit during lockdown. 'I got into cycling, and I’ve never been into cycling in my life,' she said. 'I didn’t even know what cleats were. I really got into it, and I really, really enjoyed it.

'So hopefully, when it gets a bit warmer, I’m going to start cycling again…sometimes I used to do it on my own [without Mark] and do 14 miles.' Very stylish evidence of which she shared on the 'gram (we don't think we could look that good in cycling lycra...).

With every great exercise plan comes strong fuelling so, Michelle lets us in on her nutritious food secrets. 'Breakfast is normally porridge with oat milk, and a few berries in there, or brown bread with avocado,' she explained of her yummy eating regime. 'Then for lunch, I normally have a protein base, whether it’s chicken or a fish with veg.

'I tend to stay away from potatoes around midday because I crash around 3pm if I have loads of carbs, and I get really tired…and then for tea or dinner when I get it’s the same thing, I always make seabass or salmon with soya sauce and a bit of honey on there, and then I have asparagus and broccoli.'

Now, that's our girl!
