Legally Blonde is nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece (yes, we said it), but it appears the original movie's winning formula is still in need of a tweak.

As work on Legally Blonde 3 continues – two years after Reese Witherspoon first confirmed the sequel – it appears producers are after a fresh pair of eyes on the script.

According to Deadline, The Office and Never Have I Ever's Mindy Kaling has signed on to write, along with Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator and Parks and Recreation writer, Dan Goor.

It's unclear how much work Kaling and Goor have signed up for, as Legally Blonde's producers MGM had previously reunited many of the original creative team, including writers Kirsten 'Kiwi' Smith and Karen McCullah.

Suggesting a new direction entirely for Elle Woods, it's said that Kaling and Goor have not joined the project for touch-ups, but rather to offer a screenplay with "an entirely new fresh spin".

Reese Witherspoon last offered fans an update on the upcoming threequel in 2019, revealing that they "have a script", but "haven't shot anything".

Giving little to nothing away, she added: "[Elle's] a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero's journey like she does in the first movie, and I'm having a great time working on it."

We'd like to say we'll be bending, snapping, and drafting a bill before we know it, but we're not so sure...
