Mission: Impossible 7 bringing back Kittridge was "really fun"

From Digital Spy

Mission: Impossible 7's director sprung the mother of all surprises on us recently by revealing that a blast from Ethan Hunt's past would be back.

Then-head of the IMF Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) hasn't been seen since the first movie all those years back, where he proved to be quite the thorn in Hunt's side.

However, while the specific reasons for bringing him back in both Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 are unclear, director Christopher McQuarrie has revealed that he came to mind while writing a particular scene.

"I've been thinking about Kittridge going all the way back to Rogue Nation," he told the Empire Podcast. "I'm much more interested in finding something great for that character to do.

"Early in this process I had an inkling that there could be a place for Kittridge – the tone of the movie, the shape of the movie lent itself to that. I realised, 'Kittridge has got to be in this scene'.

"I had written it not knowing who was in it, and then suddenly Kittridge came into it and the scene was transformed, it was really fun. I got to call Henry Czerny and say, 'You're in! Will you be in it?' He was great about it."

As well as Czerny, the movie will of course see the return of Tom Cruise, as well as new additions Nicholas Hoult, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham and Hayley Atwell.

Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8, which will be shot back-to-back, will be released on July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022 respectively.
