The trailer for the last instalment of the Mission: Impossible film franchise has been released.

Sharing the trailer on X (formerly Twitter), Tom Cruise, the star of the action spy series, announced that its final iteration, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, will be released on May 23, 2025.

The film will follow the events of 2023’s Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which saw protagonist IMF agent Ethan Munt, played by Cruise, confront a dangerous AI system. Although the seventh film in the series performed well among critics, it brought in only $570 million (£443m) at the box office against a $291m (£226m) budget.

The upcoming film was initially supposed to be a second chapter of the 2023 release. However, the strategy shifted in response to its predecessor’s box office performance. Now, the film will mark the end of the series, which began in 1996.

In true Mission Impossible style, the trailer depicts Cruise, 62, scuba diving, exploring a submarine and gripping onto a plane’s wing.

Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Vanessa Kirby will all reprise their roles for the series finale, as will Angela Basset and Henry Czerny.

Hannah Waddingam (Ted Lasso) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) will join the cast.
