Mobile game Fruit Ninja coming to the big screen

‘Angry Birds’ was just the beginning.

Yes, there’s another movie based on a popular mobile phone video game in the works, and this time it’s ‘Fruit Ninja.’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema have purchased the movie rights to the Halfbrick Studios phone app; one of the biggest-selling titles in its field, with upwards of a billion downloads.

The film has been in development since this spring, with screenwriters J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani attached. Reportedly their script centres on “a team of misfits who are recruited to become Fruit Ninjas in order to save the world.”

Lavin and Damiani have also written the in-development ‘How To Survive a Garden Gnome Attack,’ so it would seem they’ve got a good sense for bringing audacious concepts to fruition (no pun intended).

Unlike ‘Angry Birds,’ ‘Fruit Ninja’ is set to be a live-action project. No director or casting has been announced yet, but the film will be produced by Tripp Vinson, who is responsible for such other New Line Cinema hits as the ‘Journey’ movies and ‘San Andreas.’
