Liverpool have ‘almost agreed’ personal terms with Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

There have been some claims in Mac Allister’s native Argentina today that his move to Liverpool this summer is already complete. However, those sources seem to be jumping the gun slightly. Nevertheless, optimism is seriously growing regarding the chances of a move.

It emerged on Friday that Mac Allister has a release clause in his contract, which will allow Liverpool to bypass negotiations with Brighton if they believe it is an appropriate value.

Therefore, they just need to focus on convincing Mac Allister to make Liverpool his next step. Fortunately, he has long since seemed enticed by the prospect of moving to Merseyside – even without Champions League football.

Now, Romano has confirmed that although the deal is not done, Liverpool are on the verge of securing an agreement with Mac Allister about the contract he would be signing.

Romano tweeted on Saturday evening: “Personal terms are almost agreed between Liverpool and Mac Allister — after project presented in April.

“Deal not done yet, there are still details left — Pochettino appreciates him.

“No issues with Brighton — been told there’s fixed price for Alexis’ exit in June.”

Therefore, it appears there is indeed an exit clause in Mac Allister’s contract. However, Liverpool are not the only club who could activate it, especially if Mauricio Pochettino encourages Chelsea to make a move for him.

Pochettino is set to become Chelsea’s next head coach and might want to reinforce a midfield that was already strengthened with the signing of Mac Allister’s compatriot Enzo Fernandez for a British transfer record fee in January.

Alexis Mac Allister set to spearhead Liverpool midfield rebuild

Should the Reds get their way, though, Mac Allister could be the most high-profile arrival within their midfield rebuild this summer.

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be leaving the club on free transfers. Coincidentally, Milner appears to be on his way to Mac Allister’s current club, Brighton.

To fill the void, Liverpool are looking to make up to three midfield signings this summer. There now seems to be a growing confidence that Mac Allister will be one of them.

It is believed he will cost whoever buys him next a transfer fee in the region of €70million (£60.8m).

Mac Allister became a World Cup winner with Argentina in December, enhancing his reputation. At club level, he has scored 12 goals from 37 appearances in all competitions this season.

But Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has already conceded defeat in their hopes of keeping the 24-year-old this summer. Therefore, everything seems to be aligning for Liverpool to offer him the next step.

By joining Liverpool, Mac Allister will be able to experience European football for the first time in his career, since Jurgen Klopp’s side are set to be in next season’s Europa League.
