We've got a tiny bit more detail on HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, as HBO has confirmed that the action will take place 8,000 years before Jon Snow et al turn up, and that rather than following Thrones in having nominal main characters, it'll be an ensemble piece. However, it won't set out to answer any questions fans have been brooding on from the main series.

"There are very strong female characters but it’s an ensemble, there is men and women," Casey Bloys, HBO's president of programming, told Deadline. "Jane is a very good writer, we don’t want to limit her to writing female leads. There are a lot of very complicated leads in [the pilot]."

Bloys also said that while the prequel is set in Westeros, fans shouldn't expect writer Jane Goldman to answer their specific questions about the universe or to try to mimic the feel of the main series.

"Jane did not go into that wanting to answer anything about Game of Thrones; it was the story that spoke to her. It will feel very different because it’s 8,000 years before, it’s a very different setting, a very different time in Westeros. It will feel different but still Game of Thrones."

That would presumably also preclude any cameos or walk-on parts for any of the Thrones cast, though there's always room for a dream sequence or two if things are looking a bit ropey mid-season.
