The Morning Show and Misbehaviour star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is set to lead the cast of new BBC One and HBO Max production The Girl Before.

Directed by Killing Eve's Lisa Brühlmann, this four-part psychological thriller is adapted from JP Delaney's bestselling novel of the same name, with the author serving as creator, co-writer and executive producer on the series too.

Selma and Les Misérables star David Oyelowo also stars in the series alongside Mbatha-Raw.

The action follows Jane (Mbatha-Raw) as she gets the chance to move into a gorgeous, ultra-minimalist property designed by a mysterious architect (The Midnight Sky's Oyelowo). There's one catch to living in the brilliant new home, however, as while living there, occupants have to abide by the architect's list strict rules.

After Jane moves in, she begins to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but she soon discovers that the woman who lived in the house before her, Emma, died in the property.

As Jane is forced to confront the similarities between herself and Emma, the two women's timelines begin to interweave, and Jane begins to wonder if she'll face the same grisly fate as the girl before.

"I'm so excited to work with this amazing team on such a compelling story in my debut role as actor/producer," Mbatha-Raw said in a statement.

Oyelowo added: "This story is mind-bending in its clever construction and intricacy. I can't wait to see it, let alone be in it. Plus, I'd go anywhere to work with my friend Gugu again."

Speaking about the new TV adaptation, creator Delaney praised the "world-class talent" who have signed up to be a part of the series.

"Having written for the screen in a previous career, it's long been a dream of mine to adapt The Girl Before, but I was determined to only do it if I could find partners who wanted to pursue high-quality, classy storytelling above all else," Delaney shared.

"You really couldn’t get a more quality-focused line-up than 42, the BBC and HBO Max – and we've already attracted world-class talent in the shape of Lisa, Gugu and David.

"Psychological thrillers can be even more gripping on television than they would be as movies, and I'm incredibly excited to be re-telling this particular story in a visual medium."

Further casting and filming details for The Girl Before will be confirmed at a later date. The Girl Before will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and HBO Max in the US.
