The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones star Godfrey Gao has died, aged 35.

The Taiwan-born actor played Magnus Bane in the 2013 film and is reported to have collapsed while filming a guest role on Chinese variety show Chase Me.

The show sees teams competing to win a race, with Chase Me producers claiming Godfrey fell unconscious while running in a team event.

He later died in hospital, in what has been called a "sudden cardiac death".

"After two hours of all-out efforts to save him, the hospital [said] he had suffered a sudden cardiac death."

As well as The Mortal Instruments, Godfrey starred in a number of other projects including The Jade Pendant, Legend of the Ancient Sword and Another Shot.

In a tweet, Spider-Man: Far From Home actor Remy Hii said the Asian artistic community would not be "the same without him".

"I am beyond devastated to hear about the death of Godfrey Gao," Remy wrote.

"This is a loss to us as a community as asian artists and it’s fair to say it will never be the same without him."
