This 'Avengers: Endgame' Deleted Scene Will Divide Fans

Marvel Studios' revelations at San Diego Comic Con about what fans can expect from Phase Four of the MCU might have had us looking ahead to the future this week, but a newly released deleted scene just dragged our attention back to Avengers: Endgame. In this never-before-seen moment from the movie's epic climax, viewers witness how the full line-up of the Avengers react in the immediate aftermath of Iron Man's death.

It's a dramatic scene which in many ways feels like a fitting way to pay tribute at the end of a decade's worth of storytelling... It's also overwrought and cheesy, and the Russo Brothers were probably right to remove it from the final cut ahead of Endgame's cinematic release.

In the version of the movie we all saw in theaters, the screen fades to black after Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) has tearfully kissed Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) goodbye.

However, it's revealed that the scene went on for another minute and a half, showing all of the other characters kneeling in respect to their fallen comrade. Which is pretty weird, considering some of them (like Evangeline Lilly's Wasp and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie) had never even met Stark on-screen before that final battle.

The mass kneeling was started by Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who was only there in the first place because Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) sacrificed her own life to save his. Would it have been too much to take a knee for the woman who literally died for you, Clint?

There is one brief moment in the deleted scene which does at least partially answer a question that some fans had: what happened to Gamora (Zoe Saldana) after the battle? Gamora is shown to be the only character who doesn't kneel, which again, makes perfect sense as she was from a previous era in the timeline and had never met Stark — she is instead shown quietly exiting the battlefield, presumably going on to steal a ship and get off the planet, prompting Peter Quill's search for her at the end of the movie.

This extended sequence was replaced in the theatrical edit by the funeral at Stark's house by the lake, which arguably worked better as a way to end Phase Three of the MCU, as it brought back the full slate of characters from the MCU and didn't play like a scene from the director's cut of Lord of the Rings.

This and more deleted scenes will be available with the home video release of Avengers: Endgame on August 13.
