Britney Spears has absolutely no time for critical consensus, it seems, declaring Robert Downey Jr.’s widely derided Dolittle to be a “must see” movie.

The pop star reviewed the fantasy flop on her Instagram page and declared that it contains “hilarious” animal characters and what she refers to as a “special tone”.

Dolittle did not have the same effect on film critics or cinema audiences, scoring a dismal 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It also flopped at the box office, earning just $223m (£180m) worldwide and presenting a possible loss of around £77m for Universal.

Spears said she has been watching lots of movies while in quarantine, but that Dolittle stood out from the rest.

“Robert Downey Jr. is so genuine you fall in love with him,” she wrote.

She added: “The animal characters are hilarious and there seems to be a Special Tone throughout the whole movie which I find hard to find these days.”

The 38-year-old singer also said she got “lost” as a result of her love for Downey Jr.’s outfits in the movie.

It’s fair to say that Spears has more reach than the average film critic, speaking directly to almost 24 million followers on her Instagram.

Dolittle was the latest in a series of adaptations of Hugh Lofting’s 1920s adventure books.

Rex Harrison played the character in 1967, with Eddie Murphy taking over the role for two movies in 1998 and 2001.

The new version, directed by Traffic screenwriter Stephen Gaghan, follows Downey Jr.’s vet as he takes on a quest in order to heal the ailing queen of England.

Its production was troubled and plagued by reported power struggles behind the scenes, with the suggestion being that Downey Jr. exercised a high degree of creative control.

Despite all of this, it now has a very famous fan indeed. Oops, she watched it again.
