Caution: spoilers for ‘SPECTRE’ ahead.
A report claims that Christoph Waltz may be set to return in the next James Bond - but on the not-insubstantial condition that Daniel Craig comes back too.
As anyone who’s seen ‘SPECTRE’ knows, it would make perfect sense for the double-Oscar winner Waltz to return in future Bond movies, given that the film’s final act revealed him to be Bond’s classic nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
Yes, it was an underwhelming reveal which proved that director Sam Mendes and co had learned nothing from JJ Abrams’ similarly misguided handling of Khan in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’
Even so, it’s hard to think of any contemporary actor better suited to the most iconic of Bond bad guys, previously portrayed by the likes of Donald Pleasance, Telly Savalas and Charles Gray.
According to the Mirror, Waltz has signed on to reprise the role in two further Bond movies - so long as Craig also stays on.
An unnamed source is quoted as saying, “Christoph could make a brilliant ongoing man for Bond to battle like in the old days. But the important clincher of it is that Blofeld can only work with Daniel back in the role to keep continuity.“
The irony here is that, if Waltz does indeed return, he will be the first Blofeld actor to do so. The character has appeared in seven James Bond movies - eight if we include 1983′s unofficial ‘Never Say Never Again’ - with a different actor in the role every time (with the exception of Anthony Dawson and Eric Pohlmann, who played the body and voice respectively of the largely unseen Blofeld in ‘From Russia With Love’ and ‘Thunderball.’)
Craig’s return to Bond remains unconfirmed. The actor strongly indicated whilst in promotion on ‘SPECTRE’ that he may have had enough, notoriously remarking at one point that he would rather slash his wrists than play Bond again.
Still, reports have claimed that Craig may yet return as 007 for as many as two more movies.
‘SPECTRE’ has made almost $852 million (roughly £576 million) at the worldwide box office so far.
