Cillian Murphy is officially back for 28 Years Later.

The actor starred in the original 28 Days Later, in what was his breakthrough performance, all the way back in 2002. We already knew that he was back for the new film as an executive producer, and has spoken about wanting to play Jim again.

But now Sony Motion Pictures chairman Tim Rothman has now confirmed that Murphy will indeed be back as Jim for the film.

Speaking to Deadline, he said that Jim will be back "in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way."

When he was asked about his potential return, Murphy reminisced on what the film means to him personally, and its lasting impact with the general public.

"I've always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me – I have great affection for it and for those guys, [Alex Garland and Danny Boyle]. I never watch my own films, except that one," he said.

"It's always on around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips. And I've shown it to my kids. It's really stood up, even though it's 22 years old now, so I'm really thrilled that we'll get the band back together to make this one."

As well as Murphy, the film is set to star Jack O'Connell, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes.

The film was recently confirmed to be coming out next summer, with production for the second film in the new trilogy set to take place shortly after the first one wraps, and will reportedly have Candyman and The Marvels' Nia DaCosta as director.

28 Years Later is set for release on June 20, 2025
