Daniel Craig has revealed the origin of his secret cameo as a Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens — he asked for it.

The 54-year-old actor, who is currently promoting his return as Southern sleuth Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, discussed his Star Wars appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast — reported via Total Film.

"I love [Star Wars], of course I do. I wouldn't have asked to be in them if I wasn't a fan," he said, revealing he worked his way in via Star Wars assistant director Ben Dixon, who had worked with Craig on several James Bond films.

Craig, who was at Pinewood for a costume fitting, revealed: "I just said 'could I get a part in this?' and he went 'yeah'."

Craig's cameo takes place during the scene in which Rey is captured and is awaiting interrogation by Kylo Ren.

She uses her nascent Jedi skills to carry out a mind trick on a Stormtrooper guarding her, which speaks with Craig's distinctive voice as he lets her go.

The star revealed his brief but enjoyable cameo came together very quickly after his chat with Dixon opened the door to the galaxy far, far away.

"Next day, I'm in a f***ing suit. These things, they do not fit. All I remember is I had to wear this suit all day and I couldn't feel my hands at the end of the day," Craig said.

He added: "And I thought: 'God, these poor people have to wear them in the desert'. Kudos to these people."

Despite making a big impression in his single scene, Craig's gullible Stormtrooper has never been seen again in the Star Wars franchise and is unlikely to show up again — unless there's a very surprising Disney+ announcement on the way.

Craig will, however, be reprising the role of Benoit Blanc again for a third Knives Out movie, after he and director Rian Johnson signed a two-film deal with Netflix.

Glass Onion, which is available to stream now, is the first of those movies and follows Blanc as he is invited to a murder mystery party on a billionaire's private Greek island.
