Dirty Dancing To Be Remade Into A TV Movie

Nobody puts Baby in a corner. Putting her on TV, however, seems to be fine.

For it has been revealed that 80s classic ‘Dirty Dancing’ is to be remade for TV in the US by the ABC network.

The reinvigorated dance-romance will star Abigail Breslin in the role of Baby Houseman, originally played back in 1987 by Jennifer Grey.

Breslin first made her name as the child star of indie hit 'Little Miss Sunshine’ in 2006, and is now starring in horror series ‘Scream Queens’.

Thus far, there’s no word on who will play Johnny, the snake-hipped dreamboat dance teacher played by the late Patrick Swayze, the movie which catapulted him to stardom.

But directing will be Wayne Blair, the Australian who helmed the acclaimed 2012 movie 'The Sapphires’, with the adaptation being spread over a three-hour TV 'event’, with songs and, as you’d hope, dance numbers.

Allison Shearmur and Eleanor Bergstein, who penned the original screenplay, will be executive producing.

The original movie was directed by Emile Ardolino, also known for 'Sister Act’, on a relatively frugal $6 million (£4 million) budget.

However, it became a worldwide phenomenon, scoring $214 million (£142 million) at the box office – more like $450 million (£300 million) these days.

It followed the story of Baby Houseman, a shrinking violet who finds herself awakened after meeting dance instructor Danny while holidaying with her wealthy family at a resort in the Catskills.

As well as the movie being a smash hit, it won the climactic track ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’ by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes an Oscar for Best Original Song.

The movie was adapted into a stage musical in 2004, 'Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage’, with a prequel/reimagined movie 'Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights’, being released the same year, starring British actress Romola Garai and Diego Luna, which transplanted the story to Cuba in the 1950s.
