Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey Turned Down A Role In The Remake

It’s been 29 years since the late Patrick Swayze literally swept Jennifer Grey off her feet in the romantic drama ‘Dirty Dancing’, but Grey actually refused a part in the remake.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress who famously played Baby said she was approached for the ABC TV movie but chose to turn it down.

“I was asked to do something on that show and I was flattered because I always want to be asked because it’s nice to want to be included. But for me, it would be sacrosanct for me to do it because it didn’t feel appropriate to me. It feels like if you’re going to do your own thing, do your own thing. I wouldn’t say [what role was offered] but I will tell you, it wasn’t Baby!”

Presumably Grey declined the role because, as she puts it, it didn’t feel quite right. The likelihood is that it was a cameo of sorts, clearly as a different character just as she clarifies.

It’s interesting that she doesn’t specify what the role was - are we going to be left guessing forever or is it simply to avoid spoilers?

What we do know is that Abigail Breslin is the new Baby opposite newcomer Colt Prattes who will attempt to fill the iconic shoes of Swayze as Johnny Castle.

Talking about the idea of the remake itself, Grey was keen to see what a modern version will be like almost 30 years later: "I am always interested in any iteration of something where they feel there’s more to be gotten and I would love to see what it is that they come up with.”

“Tommy Kail [who directed ‘Hamilton’] directed it and I’m obsessed with ‘Hamilton’, so that’s thrilling to me. I think they’ve got wonderful actors in it. I’m going to be watching it and I’m excited. My only advice is to own it for yourself because we all just do our interpretation and I’m only flattered and excited for people who are excited enough to put their stamp on it and see what they make of it and how they make it their own.“

So no pressure there then for Breslin - as long as she does her own thing, it seems Grey will be satisfied.

ABC’s ‘Dirty Dancing’ is a three-hour affair that currently doesn’t have an air date but will still follow the classic story of Baby falling in love with summer resort dance instructor Castle.
