It's another busy month for Disney+, with the streamer continuing the expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the world of TV. After the one-two punch of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel is set to venture further into the world of time travel with Loki — following the 2012 incarnation of the character after his escape from custody during Avengers: Endgame.

Elsewhere, Pixar delivers its second successive Disney+ premiere, with Luca set to debut on the streaming platform as well as in UK cinemas. There's also a documentary about a famous chef, a limited series about the battle for LGBT+ rights in America and Cynthia Erivo's huge TV biopic of Aretha Franklin.

Original movies coming to Disney+ UK in June 2021

Luca (18 June)

Much like Luca Guadagnino's romantic drama Call Me By Your Name, Pixar's new movie Luca — the name presumably isn't a coincidence — is a coming of age tale set in the sunny idyll of an Italian summer. The movie follows the titular young boy as he spends a fairytale summer enjoying the company of his new best friend. But the twist is that they are both sea monsters, which gives this a distinctly Pixar wrinkle.

Long-time Pixar employee Enrico Casarosa makes his feature directorial debut with this movie, having been nominated for an Oscar a decade ago for his work on the short film La Luna.

Wolfgang (25 June)

Austrian chef Wolfgang Puck has been a household name in the United States for decades, having risen up the ranks after a troubled childhood. This documentary follows his life story, spotlighting him as one of the figures who helped to popularise the idea of a celebrity chef. In the director's chair is David Gelb, who has form in this arena having previously made the acclaimed 2011 documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, which focused on an 85-year-old sushi master in Japan.

Challenges for an actor don't get much bigger than taking on one of the most iconic figures in the history of popular culture — Aretha Franklin, queen of soul. Fresh off her Oscar nomination for playing Harriet Tubman in Harriet, Cynthia Erivo steps up to portray Franklin in the third season of National Geographic series Genius which has, in previous seasons, told the stories of Albert Einstein (Geoffrey Rush) and Pablo Picasso (Antonio Banderas).

The eight episodes of the show are being released in weekly double bills throughout June, with Erivo playing Franklin throughout several decades of her illustrious musical career.

Loki (weekly from 9 June) + Marvel Studio Legends: Loki and The Tesseract (4 June)

Marvel is back and, this time, it's Tom Hiddleston's Loki who gets the time to shine. After escaping with the Tesseract during the time travel segment of Avengers: Endgame, Loki draws the attention of the Time Variance Authority — a bureaucratic organisation whose job is to preserve the integrity of time itself. Owen Wilson portrays one of the TVA's analysts, while Gugu Mbatha-Raw and His House star Wunmi Mosaku also feature in the cast.

As they have with the other Marvel series, Disney will also unveil two episodes of Marvel Studios Legends to catch viewers up on the story to date, with Loki and the Tesseract each serving as the focus for one of these recap blasts.

The Gloaming (Star, weekly from 11 June)

This crime thriller series from Australia follows a pair of detectives working to investigate the murder of an unidentified woman. As is often the case with these stories, there's a murky history between the two cops and the case inevitably has links to something in the past. There are also occult elements and a political conspiracy in play, so there's plenty for fans of the genre to chew on.

Love, Victor (Star, S2 weekly from 18 June)

'Love Victor' is a spin-off of the movie 'Love Simon' (Disney/Hulu)

The first season of Love Victor — a TV spin-off for the genuinely lovely romcom Love Simon — was a huge part of the launch offering for the Star platform earlier this year, and its delayed release means UK fans faced a smaller gap before the arrival of this second run. Michael Cimino returns in the title role.

The Mysterious Benedict Society (weekly from 25 June)

Adapted from a novel of the same name, this series follows a group of gifted orphans who are recruited to a secret organisation in order to help save the world from a global threat known only as The Emergency. Tony Hale portrays Mr Benedict — the man who brings the kids together — with Kristen Schaal also a part of the cast. There are four books in the series, so that leaves The Mysterious Benedict Society with plenty of opportunities to explore further stories.

PRIDE (Star, 25 June)

This limited documentary series — which premiered on FX this month — spotlights six LGBT+ filmmakers as they explore key moments and people in the battle for civil rights for the gay community during the 20th century. It takes on everything from FBI surveillance of gay people, the Stonewall riots in 1969 and the culture wars of the 1990s.
