Dungeons And Dragons Reboot Finds Director

The celebrated fantasy role-playing game is getting the big screen treatment again - and now we know who’s going to be the de facto dungeon master.

The Tracking Board reveals that Rob Letterman - director of ‘Shark Tale,’ ‘Monsters vs Aliens,’ ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ and most recently ‘Goosebumps’ - will take the helm of the new ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ movie for Warner Bros.

No casting news yet, but TB note that the producers are said to be seeking ‘a Vin Diesel type’ for the heroic lead.

The script from David Leslie Johnson (screenwriter of ’Wrath of the Titans,’ currently working on ‘Aquaman’ and the upcoming ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ reboot) is said to focus on “a warrior and his band of mystical creatures – including a half-dragon and a cunning gnome – as they embark on a dangerous journey to find a mythical treasure.”

Sounds just the kind of classic sword-and-sorcery set-up that Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s wildly popular game has long been renowned for.

First published in 1974, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ became a popular sensation well into the 1980s, kickstarting the RPG boom, and notoriously inspiring a moral panic among concerned religious groups who feared the game promoted occultism and devil worship.

Still, the game was commercially successful enough to spawn a slew of merchandise, as well as books, comics and a popular animated TV series.

The franchise first came to the big screen in 2000′s ‘Dungeons and Dragons,’ a hugely derivative fantasy adventure whose cast included Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch. It was almost unanimously panned by fans and critics alike.

Interestingly, the 2000 film’s director Courtney Solomon remains on board the new ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ as a producer, along with Roy Lee, plus Stephen Davis and Brian Goldner of Hasbro.

No release date for ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ has been announced at present.
